ALL OUT - HONOR

Honor is so important to God’s heart. Let us start with defining it.

Honor means:

  • To regard or treat someone with admiration and respect
  • To give special recognition to someone or something

This seems like a simple definition and an easy task. The truth is that true honor has to come from the heart if it is to be authentic. When authentic honor isn’t present, it affects the ability of the person who has been called of God to effectively minister properly to them. Even Jesus experienced this.

Matthew 13:53-58 NKJV

53 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there. 54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, "Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 And His sisters, are they not ALL with us? Where then did this Man get ALL these things?" 57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house." 58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Because they felt they knew Him on a personal basis, they lost a certain amount of honor and respect. Their familiarity with Jesus as a person caused HIS ANOINTING to be limited to them. Can you understand the POWER of what DISHONOR can do in a person’s life? Our lives will be limited in giving OUT and in receiving if we don’t operate in a SPIRIT of HONOR.

People honor people they admire and they aspire to be like them. But just like in this example of Jesus, we cannot receive the fullness of what God has provided for us through another, if we fail to recognize their gifts, their anointing, and their God-given abilities. In our hearts we must keep acknowledging what God has done in their lives for them to be able to help us. If we aren’t careful, we think they are just like us and we can discount what God has done.

Certainly, Jesus was not just like those with whom He was raised. They could not receive from Him because they could not accept who He actually was in their thoughts and attitudes. This is a spirit that still affects the world today. Unfortunately, it affects the Church, as well.

If we learn to obey God and give honor to others, we will begin to monitor our hearts and bring back a SPIRIT of honor to the atmosphere.

I was taught to honor people in authority—teachers, police, parents, and pastors. It wasn’t a suggestion; it was mandatory. It is not popular now even for parents to train children to have honor. Instead, media portrays that it is funny to show dishonor these days. Disrespect seems to be winning in the world’s viewpoint. Even those that seem to be showing honor, may not be really honoring.

Have you ever noticed that when someone speaks evil of someone, it is very easy for you to agree with them and the whole atmosphere changes into a negative space? Have you also noticed how hard it is to keep your heart in proper position against that without dishonoring the one you are speaking to?

Anyone can ACT like they are honoring, but if inside they are not, then it isn’t real and it will not benefit them. It reminds me of the familiar story of the child who was made to sit in the corner for punishment and said, “I am sitting down on the outside, but I am still standing up on the inside.”

God is looking for authentic people who desire to honor Him so much, that they are people of honor who honor others, also. It goes beyond doing what you are asked to do. It has to be a decision that overcomes familiarity. This is the time that God is calling His Church back into the place of doing ALL things to bring honor and glory to Him.

If we do not walk with honor in our hearts to others, we will lose the honor in our hearts for Him also, because there is a spirit of dishonor that is working on the earth today. Its diabolic purpose is to crush the effectiveness of the Lord dealing with our hearts.

The spirit of dishonor works to destroy the ability of those who are placed in authority over us to speak into our lives. It works to cause division among the brethren. It causes us to not give each other honor because our own opinions matter more to us than doing things in line with God’s desires.

God believes in honor. He doesn’t do anything without purpose, design and structure. Honor is His design. It is built into His structure, and it is in His original purpose. From the beginning God was to be honored.

God designed Adam and Eve to stay in the structure He made for them to abide by. He came first, and He gave them a position designed to stay in honor under His authority, and in honor to the authority He entrusted to them. As we know, they didn’t stay in honor under God’s authority and destruction was the result.

If a person has a spirit of dishonor operating in them, it is contagious. It causes us to lose the appreciation that accompanies honor and opens our heart to receive from those who are called to help us.

Hebrews 13:17 KJV

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

Obey means:

  • Reflexively or passively to assent to authority; to rely by inward certainty
  • Agree, assure, believe, have confidence, be confident, make friends, obey, persuade, trust, yield

Similarly, remember that honor means:

  • To regard or treat someone with admiration and respect
  • To give special recognition to someone or something

God uses whomever He chooses. It is our job to keep our hearts in proper order as far as pure honor is concerned. This can be a difficult job if we have not been raised around those who practice honor. Those who were raised to understand honor have a much easier time than those who were not taught to honor. However, that does not excuse us from the necessity of honoring others. We must have the understanding that God wants us to operate in honor for our own good.

The SPIRIT of honor will go from generation to generation and so will a spirit of dishonor. I can attest to you today that the families at Liberty, with parents who honor those in authority over them, produce children who also respect and honor me and those in positions of authority at Liberty.

They have greatly benefitted by this, because often the words of the Lord that flow through me have saved lives, futures, and godly destiny. This is not just because I am their pastor, but because they honored me as their pastor, which released the gifts in me to be utilized for their benefit. We must also understand that honor isn’t just for those in positions of authority. It blesses and benefits everyone.

1 Peter 2:17 NKJV

Honor ALL people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the King.

Is this impossible? No, we must realize that even if we can’t honor a person’s actions, we can choose to honor them because they are a child of God. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you operate in a SPIRIT of honor to your spouse and to your children?
  • Children, do you honor your parents and your teachers?
  • Christians, do you honor God in word and in deed?
  • Christians, do you honor ALL of God’s children the way He would want you to?

Christians, it is time for us as the Church to demonstrate in the world the way the SPIRIT of God manifests Himself. If we say we love them, but we have allowed disrespect to rule in our hearts, they will sense our words mean nothing. Disrespect and dishonor are a spirit that we must stand against.

What did that town miss that refused to give honor to Jesus? What will we miss giving to our town if we refuse to give honor to Jesus? At the very least, we and the world will miss some very special and amazing stuff. Honoring Jesus means that we become an example of honoring Him and every person as He would.

The words in our hearts are being heard, whether we speak them OUT loud or not.

Pastor Dawn Rene McCann

#Spirit-Empowered Prayer:

Lord, please help us to honor those in authority, not as something we must do, but as something that we choose to do because it is a privilege. Many times, my choice to honor will save my life because of the wisdom I am able to receive from those who speak into my life. I believe that ALL in the Body of Christ are coming into the place where we will walk in honor towards one another as You have asked us to do. I believe in seed, time, and harvest and that it applies in every area. As Your Body arises in honor, we also have a harvest of others walking in honor, in whatever part of their journey they happen to be. This enables us to rise into ALL You have for us to be. Let us choose honor and reflect You in every area of our lives,

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
